Welcome to the new blogging home for Thunder Canyon, A Private Golf and Country Club. The Club is located in Washoe Valley, Nevada. It sits at the base of the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Just a full six-iron shot below Lake Tahoe.
Thunder Canyon has one of the top five golf courses in Northern Nevada and by far it is one of the best "Private" Clubs in the area.
With its spectacular views, this Robert Muir Graves Championship Golf Course not only is stimulating to the eye, but challenging to even the best golfers. The course is has eleven crystalline lakes and streams that reflect the awesome area beauty as well as add to the challenge of your golf outing.
The ranch-style clubhouse reflects the history of the valley. The Washoe Valley is rich in history as well as its beauty. Originally inhabited by the Washoe Indians, it became a preferred location for their summer retreats. Over time they were replaced by the cattle barons and mining kings. In 1850's the valley had one of the premiere cattle ranches in all of Northern Nevada.
Grant Weis purchased the ranch in 1954. He was retiring from an electrical manufacturing company he had founded in Southern California. Combing his old company logo, the lightning bolt with the first letter of his last name he registered the new ranch name as; "Lightning W Ranch".
In 1976, Grant's son Bob Weis purchased the ranch from his father. As the area began to develop with more rural estates a new regional plan was to be put into effect that would restrict growth in the valley. Bob and his wife Cathy took the limited window of opportunity that was available to them and decided to create a private golf club and estate community to try and keep the true beauty of the valley intact.
The development of the 335 acres with more than 200 of those acres being the groomed fairways of the course as well as the preserved wildlife habitat and mature open spaces. 107 home sites are dotted around the course with each site being 1+ acres.
In 1994 The Golf Club at Lightning W Ranch officially took on its members. Roger and Gayle Block were one of those "Founding Members". By 1999, after many years as members of the club. Roger and Gayle Block choose to purchase the club from the members. It was at this time that they decided to change the name to its current name, Thunder Canyon, A Private Golf And Country Club.
At this time, the Block's remain the sole owners of the Club.
